Greek Life: Sigma Nu Beta Iota

I was a member of the Beta Iota chapter at the University of Mount Union for all four years of my college career. I joined Sigma Nu during my freshman year of college because I saw an opportunity to grow as a person during college career. Sigma Nu is a non-hazing fraternity and strives for excellence in philanthropy and service. Through Sigma Nu, I significantly built my leadership and organizational skills as I had the opportunity to be the Vice President and President of the Beta Iota Chapter. I was elected Vice President by my brothers in 2017 and elected president in 2018, both terms were year-long positions.

I was elected Vice President during my sophomore year of college. The main role that I had in this position was organizing brotherhood events to build up the morale of the fraternity. I as well held executive council meetings once a week before our chapter meetings. Bringing the executive council once a week was important for the growth of the chapter. These meetings would consist of brainstorming ideas that could better recruitment and break the stereotypes of Greek Life to the other college students. Along with these meetings, we would organize philanthropic and service events to help the Mount Union community and the city of Alliance, Ohio. At the end of the spring semester, my main task was writing the "Pursuit of Excellence" packet for Sigma Nu Headquarters located in Lexington, Virginia. This was an important packet to organize as this shows Sigma Nu Fraternity that the Beta Iota Chapter is striving for excellence each school year. There are 10 categories that headquarters evaluates for the fraternity in the school year, with my completion of the packet, the Beta Iota Chapter received an excellence grading on seven of ten categories, with the other three categories getting a good rating from headquarters.

I decided to build my leadership skills in my junior year of college by taking on the President position for the Beta Iota chapter. My main goals coming into this position was to continue to break the stigma of Greek Life and demonstrate a positive influence on the college campus. When I took over as President, the chapter was at 53% in campus involvement. I realized that we needed to find a way to expand the chapter and get on campus as much as we could to build our organization. By the end of my term, I helped to increase campus involvement to 88%. I also stressed the importance of our philanthropic and service work. As at the end of the year, the Beta Iota chapter was one of the top greek life organizations in philanthropy and service work. My goal in my fraternity life was to break stereotypes that greek life obtains through the national media and demonstrate the positive culture that being in a greek life organization can be for students in college.
